Like Father, Like Son….

On Wisconsin Outdoors

Rick Callies shows off the 19-1/2 inch largemouth just shy of 4 pounds that took the top honors in the Lake Tichigan Wednesday Night Catch & Release Bass League May 5.  The nice bass fell to a frog and, of course, was released to fight another day. The Kettle Moraine Golf Club (https://golfkmgc.com  262-965-6200)   PGA Professional, Rick has more than a little talent on both the surf and the turf. He also knows how to pass his fishing talent, and hopefully his golf, on to son, Carson.

OWO has been watching Carson, now 6, grow up over the last few years, mainly because proud grandpa and this publisher’s friend Peter Deinlein texts some of the better catch photos right to us almost as soon as the fish are out of the water.  They go safely right back in the water after a few poses for the camera, thanks in part to Gill Shield, the invention of Rick’s brother and Carson’s Uncle, Marc (Yes, this fishing addiction is a family affair, and no, they’re not seeking a cure).

Carson Callies with a legitimate 10-inch gill.  Gill Shield takes away the frustrations that come with losing in particular smaller fish due to swallowed hooks.

Because the group is so into fishing and catch and release, Marc in recent years developed a fabulous tool for anglers who can’t stand the idea of wasting fish when they devour the hook.  OWO featured Gill Shield in On Wisconsin Outdoors’ Product 6-Pack several years ago, and we wanted to remind you to check out their website to order your own.  I’ll let the Callies speak for themselves, right off of the website at GillShield.com:

Why Gill Shield?

Fishing with Children or Inexperienced Anglers:

“Make long-lasting memories with your children. Panfishing can be one of the most fun and relaxing activities to do outdoors, especially when children get involved. Using a Gill Shield when panfishing with inexperienced anglers can save you and your child the frustration that is brought on by swallowed hooks. The Gill Shield is a revolutionary fishing aid for those who are still learning to set the hook properly, or for those who have slower reaction times. No more swallowed hooks! “

Avid Anglers:

When panfishing, Gill Shield allows you the freedom to fish multiple lines at the same time. Having a bobber go down while you’re busy reeling in a different line is no longer a problem-Gill Shield will prevent panfish from swallowing the hook, ensuring a clean hook up.

Conservation - Catch and Release:

Great for catch and release only ponds or for anglers with a passion for conservation. When panfish swallow the hook, they often die on the water when released. Gill Shield prevents panfish from swallowing the hook, allowing anglers a smooth and easy catch and release experience.

Nicely done, Callies boys.

PS: Rick restricts fishing lessons to his kids.  But if your golf swing needs some help, connect with the Kettle Moraine Golf Club website address above.
