Greater Prairie-Chickens in Wisconsin
Greater prairie-chickens are one of the most unique and charismatic wildlife species in Wisconsin, attracting many people who travel miles each spring to watch their intriguing mating displays.
Prior to 1830, greater prairie-chickens were abundant in the extensive native prairies and oak openings throughout the southern half of the state. Habitat loss has caused large shifts in the range and abundance of prairie-chickens, and today they exist in isolation in a small portion of central Wisconsin.
More information is available about greater prairie-chickens in Wisconsin on the DNR’s website.
