Department of Natural Resources closes Jackson Marsh Wildlife Areas to allow repairs on West Shore pipeline
VILLAGE OF JACKSON, Wis.--Two areas of the Jackson Marsh Wildlife Area are temporarily closed to public use, including hunting, during most of September and October to allow completion of repairs to the West Shore gas pipeline running between State Highway 60 and County Highway PV.
The two closed areas are located west of County Highway G between State Highway 60 and County Highway PV. Hunters and other property users can still access other areas in the marsh from parking areas located along State Highway 60 and County Highways G and PV.
“We believe that temporarily closing areas around the pipeline project is needed to protect both the public and workers in the construction areas, especially with hunting going on. This is a large scale project involving the installation of about 7,000 lineal feet of swamp mats, and lots of equipment such as large excavators and dozers, and dozens of workers using specialized equipment,” said Tom Isaac, Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist.
The process to upgrade the gas pipeline in Washington County and other counties was initiated in 2012 following a break in the pipeline south of the village of Jackson that contaminated ground water and wells. The project to fix the anomalies in the Jackson Marsh section of the pipeline began last January and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
