MADISON - The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board on Wednesday approved the purchase of two land parcels from the Canadian National Railway Company, totaling 84 acres, within Manitowoc and Barron counties. These tracts will extend two of Wisconsin's 41 state trails.
The first parcel, totaling 71 acres, will extend the Devil's River State Trail in Manitowoc County. This acquisition will provide a non-contiguous, 6.8 mile extension of the Devil's River State Trail.
The Devil's River State Trail offers walking, bicycling and snowmobiling opportunities, and has the potential to provide recreational opportunities to an estimated population of 1,000,000 people within a one hour drive.
The second parcel consists of 13 acres of land for the Wild Rivers State Trail in Barron County. This parcel would extend the Wild Rivers State Trail south 0.8 miles, and provide a connection to the local trail system.
The existing Wild Rivers State Trail stretches 104 miles through Douglas, Washburn and Barron counties in northwest Wisconsin. Just north of Rice Lake, the Wild Rivers State Trail connects to the 74-mile Tuscobia State Trail.
