MADISON - The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board on Wednesday approved the purchase of 273 acres of Pepin County land within the Tiffany Wildlife Area and Lower Chippewa River State Natural Area.
The newly acquired parcel, purchased from Potter's Swamp Trust, is situated along the Chippewa River and contains approximately 3,617 feet of shoreline. This parcel's access to the Chippewa River and numerous backwater sloughs will provide excellent fishing, trapping, hunting and boating opportunities. The public can gain access to the parcel from State Highway 35, and in addition there is a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources boat landing located across the river from the property.
The Tiffany Wildlife Area is home to the largest contiguous floodplain forest in the upper Midwest, and acquisition of the Potter parcel will help to maintain, restore, and connect blocks of floodplain forest and the wide array of habitats found within. This area contains the highest number of rare species (125) of any area of comparable size in Wisconsin.
