DNR: Sec. Cathy Stepp Statement on Waukesha Water Diversion

http://dnr.wi.gov/news/releases/article/?id=3995

"The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Council's decision
today regarding the city of Waukesha's request to obtain a healthy and
sustainable source of drinking water from Lake Michigan follows more than
six years of effort by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources staff.
During that time, staff applied the best science available in evaluating the
diversion application according to the Great Lakes Compact criteria.

Through this extended review, which included an environmental impact
statement, we determined that the proposal met the technical requirements of
the Great Lakes Compact while reducing the negative environmental and human
health consequences associated with a further use of the deep aquifer.
Today, DNR’s finding was supported by the members of the Great Lakes-St.
Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Council.

We at DNR are grateful for the efforts of our staff and the thoughtful
engagement of the public throughout this process. We look forward to working
with Waukesha, its residents and our neighboring Great Lakes states and
Canadian provinces to ensure that today's decision is implemented in ways
consistent with the scope of our authority and the needs of the community."
