DNR News Release: DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp Op-Ed: A time to say, "thank you"
By DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp
MADISON – Thank you. They are two words that aren’t spoken enough.
As we mark Veterans Day on Monday, let us say, “thank you.” Thank you to the men and women of the armed forces who have fought, and continue to fight, for the freedoms we enjoy every day. Thank you for giving us the ability to enjoy our land, its waters and the wildlife living in it. Thank you for giving us the freedom to spend time outdoors with family and friends. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy our state parks, fish our rivers, streams and lakes, take part and pass on the time-honored hunting tradition that is so strong in Wisconsin.
While we cannot say, “thank you” enough, we at the Department of Natural Resources want to show our appreciation for their selfless service by offering service members an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Wisconsin with reduced-priced licenses. Wisconsin residents who are disabled veterans or former prisoners of war can receive free admission to state parks and forests, in addition to other benefits. All active duty U.S. Armed Forces or Wisconsin National Guard or Reserves service members, resident or non-resident, also receive special license privileges for hunting, fishing and trapping. We have all the information about military discounts on our website at dnr.wi.gov, keyword “veteran.”
So, on Veterans Day, take time to say, “thank you.” Remember their sacrifice as you and your family enjoy all Wisconsin has to offer.
