Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

Well this warm weather certainly isn’t helping the ice fishermen any.  And as a matter of fact it didn’t do much good for the deer hunters the past few weeks either.

With warmer than normal temperatures in our area right now ice fishermen are on a stand-by until things cool down and we get a good freeze-up.  Ice starting forming last week with a few inches on some area lakes but definitely enough to support anyone.  And now with the recent warm-up the little ice we had is almost diminished to nothing.  I actually heard reports of someone trying to get out on Lake Dubay and earlier this week and they broke through and they went in over their head.  They got out but they are lucky to be alive.  If you are even thinking about ice fishing right now, don’t try it, going through the ice is not worth it.  Not only are you jeopardizing your own life, but you are jeopardizing the lives of the people that will eventually have to try and save you once you go through.

Deer hunters in our area had a pretty good season with Marathon county racking up over 8,000 deer during the 9 day gun deer season. We had some really nice bucks get taken along with many hunters filling their tags with smaller bucks and does.  We still have a few days left of the muzzleloader season if hunters still want to get out and try their luck with the old smoke pole!

As far as any other fishing, we are actually going to try to get back out in our boats and hit the open water this week/weekend and try for some walleyes and crappies.   I will keep you posted on our results as this is the latest by far that we have ever been able to get in a boat in Central Wisconsin.  We are going to target early ice walleye and crappie locations and even hit up a few spots that we have consistently caught fish late in the fall.

This is also a great time of the year to start thinking about Christmas and a time for giving. If you don’t know what to get that person on your list here are a few ideas:

Gift Certificate from Hooksetters for a guided fishing trip, open water or ice fishing.  Gift certificate from Amherst marine for a full boat check-up. Custom rod and reel from Elk River Rods, simply the best. Fishing lures from Suick Lures, Musky Innovations, or Rick Jarosh at Baitmaker Tackle. Kwik Trip Gift certificates for gas always go a long way.  Warm weather gear from Flambeau Outdoors will keep you warm and dry. Chamber Bucks from the Stevens Point area Chamber of Commerce.  Custom Food plotting by Jim Reed of Reed and Hoppe’s.  Maybe a new Crestliner boat or gear is in your future!  Or if you really want to go all out, reserve a weekend with the Conger Collection in Eagle River for a romantic weekend get-away.  And for yourself don’t forget to pick up a copy or two of the best outdoor magazine out there - On Wisconsin Outdoors.

Have a great week,
