Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report
Well the 2018 Wisconsin bear season is coming to a close and we had a very successful season here at Hooksetters with multiple bears shot and some really great stories to go along with them. Our last hunter - Dennis Hintz put the hammer down on a beautiful black bear last Saturday afternoon that weighed in dressed at 385#. Now that’s a big bear for public land in central Wisconsin. We are really excited about how our season went and are already looking forward to next year.
Fishing has been very good the past few weeks with walleyes, muskies, and crappies being the most sought after fish. If you are looking for action the walleye bite has been phenomenal with 50 to 100 fish days being the norm. I am not kidding, it has been just outstanding! We have been having really good success on crappies and bluegills too, and as the weather cools down the bite should only get better.
Musky anglers are liking the cooler weather especially seeing that the water temperatures have plummeted from the mid 60’s a week ago to the upper 40’s where they are now and they will probably stay. Now that the water temperatures are down the sucker bite will start picking up and anglers heading out should really add this technique or additional rig to their arsenal while they are casting. Simply hook up a few rods with live sucker rigs and toss them out the back of the boat. These live suckers will drag behind the boat and work independently of the lures that you are casting and add the option of live bait to your set-up.
As season starts to come to a close anglers should also start thinking about winterization of their boats before it is too late. Give the guys down at Amherst Marine a call and schedule your winterization and yearly maintenance. Their customer service is second to none and they always do a great job. I won’t go anywhere else!
