Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

It has been a crazy week in central Wisconsin with temperatures starting out near 80 and then plummeting down into the upper 20’s. With that said it has caused quite a stir in the fishing world. Hunting on the other hand couldn’t be better.

Turkey hunters had a great week for hunting with cool conditions and plenty of birds.  A lot of the activity has been centered on open fields with freshly emerging crops along with hardwoods ridges where the birds are likely to roost.  One key to being successful is to think about putting away that big old B-Mobile decoy and to opt for a single hen decoy or no decoys at all.  Many of the toms have become wary of these decoys from previous hunters and will shy away from them this late in the season.

The crappies have moved out of their traditional spawning grounds and have staged in deeper water. Look for fish to be in 6 to 12 feet of water holding off what I refer to as the second break line.  Slip bobbers with minnows or Mini-Mite’s will do the trick. Use your Humminbird side-imaging to locate schools of fish and work them from a distance.

The walleye bite has been fantastic with lots of fish being caught. On two separate trips this past week we caught over 100 fish with several nice eaters in the 16 to 18 inch range along with a few slot fish as well.  Most of the walleyes were caught on jig and minnow combinations in 4 to 8 feet of water.  The largest factor in being able to catch these fish was having a sensitive enough rod to feel the subtle pick-ups by the walleyes.  I like the Elk River ER1 Spinning Rod in this model: The 1S70MLF which is a 7’0” medium light rod with a fast action. Check them out at:http://elkrivercustomrods.com/index.html

Bass have been very aggressive this past week even with the cooler temperatures. They started off a little slow but have made leaps and bounds over the past few days.  Most of the action is coming on jigs with tubes or Texas rigged beaver tails worked in and around shoreline structure.

Brunswick Corporation and Crestliner support National Safe Boating Week, May 16-22, encouraging boaters to make safety their No. 1 concern in every aspect of being in and on the water. National Safe Boating Week will kick off early on May 15,with Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day.   Additionally, please check out the attached sweepstakes, along with this link to enter: http://bit.ly/WinASafetyKit.  The contest prize is a safety kit featuring Attwood’s bailer safety kit, multi-function LED sport light, first aid kit, telescoping emergency paddle and 40-liter dry bag along with two, Mustang personal flotation devices and a Mercury Marine emergency-shutoff lanyard. Crestliner encourages you to take advantage
