Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

The walleye bite is central Wisconsin is very good right now with not only numbers but some very nice fish as well.  Water flows on the river systems are above average which increases the walleyes migration.  The water temperatures are in the low to mid 40 degree range which is about perfect for walleyes to spawn.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

We have been targeting walleyes on the river systems now for about three weeks and the action has been very good. At this point a lot of the fish are done spawning and moving in the direction of the post spawn stage.  As opposed to seeing a lot of fish below the dams or in the deeper pools, we are catching most of our fish in heavy current as they are headed back downstream towards post spawn locations.  Wolf river rigs set with heavy sinkers and brightly colored hooks are working very well right now as are heavy, brightly colored jigs in the 3/8 ounce or larger size.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

For you guys that keep a couple of those walleyes for dinner and are looking for new ways to prepare them check out Lily River Breading at:  http://lilyriver.com/  they have the best fish breading around. I especially like the Cajun breading and it’s good on more than just fish too.

With turkey season about to start I have been doing some early morning scouting trips and I have been seeing a large number of birds in the fields. Most of the birds that I have been seeing are in areas with fresh spread cow manure and/or any accessible food source. If you are planning on turkey hunting this spring I would suggest getting out and doing your homework.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

What I would suggest is getting up early and heading out to the areas that you are planning to hunt.  Bring along a good pair of long range binoculars and try finding out exactly where the birds are entering the fields. You will want to do this from a good distance because you don’t want to alarm the birds of your presence.  Once you identify the locations that the birds are entering the fields, mentally mark those positions. This is where you will want to set up shop. You can do this the morning of your hunt (in the dark) or some afternoon when the birds are in a different location (which is what I would suggest).

With this type of preparation you should be in a perfect position to bag that spring tom when your season arrives.

Have a great week,
