Call for Presentations: 9th Wisconsin Citizen-based Monitoring Conference
Join us for this can't-miss event featuring research and project presentations, resource sharing, networking opportunities, an awards banquet, an equipment swap, and more! Everyone involved in citizen-based monitoring is encouraged to attend. Registration will open in December.
Keynote Speaker
We’re excited to announce that Dr. Karen Oberhauser, Director of the UW-Madison Arboretum will be our keynote speaker. In addition to being a world-renowned expert on the monarch butterfly, Dr. Oberhauser is the founder and director of the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, a national citizen science effort with many volunteers right here in Wisconsin. She has also developed and led numerous programs that help educators use citizen science in classrooms and nonformal learning environments.
Call for Presentations (Submissions due November 18)
We are seeking talks and poster presentations on topics related to citizen-based monitoring in Wisconsin. Potential topics include research and management outcomes of volunteer monitoring efforts, species or ecosystem overviews, project evaluations, volunteer perspectives, lessons learned from project management, and much more. We welcome presentation submissions from everyone, including volunteers, researchers, students, educators, natural resource professionals, land managers, and others.
Examples of previous presentation topics:
- Bumble Bee Brigade - A statewide citizen-based monitoring effort
- Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network (CoCoRaHS) - Citizen science in action for Wisconsin volunteers
- Contributions of citizen scientists and habitat volunteers to monarch conservation
- Improving invasive species management with citizen science: case studies from the Wisconsin First Detector Network
- Leading birding programs for the blind and visually impaired
- Long term lake monitoring reveals statewide water clarity patterns
- What is that in my water? An introduction to freshwater macroinvertebrates
Talk Details:
Talks will be 15 minutes long, followed by 5 minutes for questions and answers. Talks will be scheduled for either Friday, March 20 or Saturday, March 21.
Poster Presentation Details
The poster session will be held on Friday, March 20. All posters should have at least one presenter present during the poster session. We will provide details on poster measurements prior to the conference. The poster session is contingent on having a sufficient number of poster submissions; if we do not receive enough, we might ask those who submitted posters to consider switching to a talk.
Presenter Application
If you would like to present at the conference, you will need to provide a presentation title, abstract (summary) of no more than 150 words, your contact details, and your presentation type (talk, poster, or either). Please fill out the presentation form by November 18, 2019, to be considered.
