Government Relations

  • SEATTLE GETS GUN & AMMO TAX . . . The Seattle City Council has voted to require all retailers pay a $25 tax on each firearm and all ammunition sold in the city. The "Gun Violence Tax" will do nothing to benefit public safety but will penalize law-abiding businesses and Seattle taxpayers, who will bear the costs of defending against one or more lawsuits due to its violation of Washington State's firearms preemption law. NSSF testified against the ordinance and will continue to work on this issue.
  • FEDERAL AND STATE ROUNDUP
    • NSSF has donated $25,000 to the Fraternal Order of Police to honor the nation's fallen law enforcement officers.
    • USA Today writes about firearms manufacturers moving to more gun-friendly states.
    • Oregon's "Universal Background Check Law" is going into effect with many county sheriffs saying they will not enforce the new law.
    • NSSF members are encouraged to invite state legislators to visit their facilities to promote understanding of our economic contribution to our communities.

Retailers/Ranges

  • FBI ANNOUNCES NEW DEPLOYMENT DATE FOR NEW NICS . . . The FBI Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division has rescheduled the delivery date of Phase 1 of the New NICS to January 12, 2016. This date was selected to avoid potential risks to Federal Firearms Licensees, the public and the NICS team associated with going live during peak season; provide additional time for the CJIS Division's NICS Section employees to build proficiency with the system; and allow for additional performance testing of the system and to support NICS Index data migration.

  • RENTAL GUNS AND YOUR FFL . . .Innovative retailers are always on the lookout for ways to increase their profits by expanding their businesses. One way to do this is to add a shooting range to a retail storefront. Adding an indoor or outdoor shooting range to your facility, when done right, can certainly improve your customer traffic. However, what some retailers leave out of their range investment equation is the value of a rental gun program. Read more.
  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question asks if a United States-issued passport is a valid form of identification for a firearms purchaser to provide to an FFL. Another question asks if the federal firearms law requires licensees to comply with state laws and local published ordinances when selling firearms.
  • DID YOU KNOW? . . . NSSF members receive a significant discount from a web-design company that specializes in firearms and outdoor businesses to provide customized online business solutions. Find out more.

Henry Repeating Arms President Anthony Imperato presented the rifles to the veterans and donated $200,000 to Daniels' The Journey Home Project.
  • GRESHAMS HIGHLIGHTED IN FORBES . . . It's not often that one of our industry's small companies is highlighted in a major business magazine, but that's what happened this month when Forbes magazine technology writer Karsten Strauss focused on Tom and Ryan Gresham's new GunDealio app for iOS and Google operating systems. Known for their Gun Talk Radio show, the Greshams recently launched the app to inform shooters about deals on guns, ammunition and accessories at thousands of retail outlets. Read the story
