- BIPARTISAN SPORTSMEN'S BILL ADVANCES IN SENATE . . . The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee last week approved the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act of 2015 (S.556) with overwhelming bipartisan support. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) cast the sole recorded vote in opposition. The committee approval represents an important step toward passage of this priority legislation, which will become eligible for consideration by the entire Senate after additional provisions of the act are reported out of the Environment and Public Works Committee.

- ATTY. GEN. LYNCH QUIZZED ON AMMO 'SPORTING USE TEST' INACTION . . . Attorney General Loretta Lynch testifying before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee last week was questioned by Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) on why the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) that reports to her have not responded to any of the at least 32 petitions submitted in recent years by manufacturers requesting exemptions for non-traditional ammunition intended for sporting purposes.View the video.
- FEDERAL AND STATE ROUND-UP . . . Six Democratic U.S. Senators have joined the growing number of members of both houses of Congress calling on the Obama administration to complete implementation of Export Control Reform (ECR) to cover the firearms and ammunition industry. A New Jersey State Senate committee has passed on a party-line vote the repeal of its overall "smart gun" mandate but substituted a new mandate that all retailers carry in inventory at least one model of an authorized-user technology equipped firearm.

 RESEARCH READING DURING THANKSGIVING BREAK . . . As in any consumer marketplace, change is relatively constant and quite often inevitable. NSSF is keeping pace with changes affecting the shooting sports industry and has released several reports to help better understand such changes. - ATF Q&A . . . Many great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. Thefirst question asks if a family member picking up a pawned firearm for another family member is considered a straw purchase. The second question relates to restraining orders prohibiting the possession or acquisition of a firearm.

- SAFE PENNSYLVANIA HUNTERS . . . A Pittsburgh Tribune-Review article by Bob Frye looks at the safety record of the state's hunters and finds a significant decline in accidents over the years even though an estimated 750,000 hunters go afield annually. The article points to NSSF statistics showing that football players, skateboarders, cheerleaders, even bowlers and golfers are more likely to be injured than hunters. Hunter education classes are believed to be a major reason for the decline. Read more.
