Vol. 16 No. 47

Happy Thanksgiving from NSSF

We all have much to be thankful for. At NSSF, we thank all those who help promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports. And we thank our nation's veterans for the sacrifices they have made that give us the opportunity to be grateful for so much today. Happy Thanksgiving to you, one and all.

SHOT Show

  • HOTEL ROOMS GOING FAST. FIND DEALS THROUGH OFFICIAL HOTEL PROVIDER . . . Hotel rooms in Las Vegas are going quickly for the week of the SHOT Show. There are many affordable hotel options still available through the show's official hotel provider, onPeak. Due to multiple trade shows taking place at the same time, rooms across Las Vegas are in exceptional demand during this year's SHOT Show. If you haven't already registered for the show and made room reservations, now is the time. Book your rooms through shotshow.org/travel.
  • EXHIBITOR BOOTH VEHICLE DEADLINES APPROACHING . . . It seems the only thing we see more of than firearms each year at SHOT Show are vehicles. From trucks and SUVs to ATVs and boating equipment, the halls of the Sands Expo are loaded with the latest in highway and off-road vehicles catering to today's sportsmen and –women. To have this equipment on the show floor, however, requires a special permitting process. Here's what you need to know.
  • WEBINAR WEDNESDAY: 'TIPS & TRICKS FOR PODCASTING, VIDEO, INTERVIEWS, PHOTOGRAPHY' . . . Over 62,000 industry professionals attend SHOT Show, but there are a lot more people who wish they were there. In this webinar you'll learn how to use podcasting, live-stream and recorded video, man-on-the-street interviews and photography to reach your target audience and the consumer. This free SHOT Show exhibitor webinar, presented by trade show industry expert and author of The Social Trade Show, Traci Browne, is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 2 to 2:45 p.m. EST. Learn more.

Government Relations

  • BIPARTISAN SPORTSMEN'S BILL ADVANCES IN SENATE . . . The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee last week approved the Bipartisan Sportsmen's Act of 2015 (S.556) with overwhelming bipartisan support. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) cast the sole recorded vote in opposition. The committee approval represents an important step toward passage of this priority legislation, which will become eligible for consideration by the entire Senate after additional provisions of the act are reported out of the Environment and Public Works Committee.
    Rep. John Ratcliffe
  • ATTY. GEN. LYNCH QUIZZED ON AMMO 'SPORTING USE TEST' INACTION . . . Attorney General Loretta Lynch testifying before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee last week was questioned by Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) on why the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) that reports to her have not responded to any of the at least 32 petitions submitted in recent years by manufacturers requesting exemptions for non-traditional ammunition intended for sporting purposes.View the video.
  • FEDERAL AND STATE ROUND-UP . . . Six Democratic U.S. Senators have joined the growing number of members of both houses of Congress calling on the Obama administration to complete implementation of Export Control Reform (ECR) to cover the firearms and ammunition industry. A New Jersey State Senate committee has passed on a party-line vote the repeal of its overall "smart gun" mandate but substituted a new mandate that all retailers carry in inventory at least one model of an authorized-user technology equipped firearm.

Research

  • RESEARCH READING DURING THANKSGIVING BREAK . . . As in any consumer marketplace, change is relatively constant and quite often inevitable. News of Note

  • SAFE PENNSYLVANIA HUNTERS . . . A Pittsburgh Tribune-Review article by Bob Frye looks at the safety record of the state's hunters and finds a significant decline in accidents over the years even though an estimated 750,000 hunters go afield annually. The article points to NSSF statistics showing that football players, skateboarders, cheerleaders, even bowlers and golfers are more likely to be injured than hunters. Hunter education classes are believed to be a major reason for the decline. Read more.
