16-Year-Old Wins NSSF Rimfire Championship

RECORD ATTENDANCE . . . Sixteen-year-old Kolby Pavlock of Kuna, Idaho, claimed the title of World Champion this past weekend at the NSSF Rimfire Challenge World Championship, held at Old Fort Gun Club in Fort Smith, Arkansas. A record 200 competitors of all ages and skill levels took part. Formerly known as the Ruger Rimfire Challenge, NSSF took over ownership of the program in 2014. More than 400 Rimfire Challenge events were held across the country this year. The matches are designed to encourage family participation in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. Complete results from the world championship event will be posted during the week at www.nssf.org/rimfire/championship.

SHOT Show

  • WHAT WORKS FOR YOU AT SHOT SHOW? . . . Welcome back to another installment of "What Works for You at SHOT Show?" where exhibitors and attendees have a chance to tell us the things they've learned over the years that produce results and make the show a worthwhile investment of their time and money. This week we heard from, Steve Adelmannof North Carolina-based Citizen Arms.
  • SHOT SHOW TRIUMPHS 'AGAINST ALL ODDS,' EARNS GOLD 100 AND GRAND AWARDS . . . The SHOT Show was honored with Gold 100 recognition and a Grand Award at the Trade Show Executive Gold 100 Awards and Summit in Santa Barbara, California. The awards signify that the SHOT Show is among the Top 100 Trade Shows in the world and, for the Grand Award, that the SHOT Show overcame great obstacles to achieve extraordinary success at its 2014 show, making it the perfect candidate in the Against All Odds category.
  • NSSF AWARDS CSG CREATIVE EXTENDED SHOT SHOW CONTRACT . . . NSSF is pleased to announce that it has extended its relationship with CSG Creative to serve as the official marketing agency of SHOT Show through 2019. Government Relations

  • SENATE DEMOCRATS ANNOUNCE GUN CONTROL PUSH . . . A group of Senate Democrats gathered on the Capitol steps last week to announce that they would be championing a broad package of gun control measures in response to the tragedy at a community college in Oregon. The Democratic effort brings back a policy change wish list we have seen before centered on expanding the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to cover the so-called "gun show loophole" and private firearms transfers. No Republican senators were present. NSSF will keep you informed of any developments.
  • FEDERAL AND STATE ROUNDUP . . . The 30-day Nashville public awareness campaign for the "Don't Lie for the Other Guy" program was officially launched last week. Gov. Jerry Brown of California has vetoed SB 347, but unfortunately did sign AB 96, the ivory ban, into law. The U.S. House Natural Resources Committee approved H.R. 2406, the Sportsmen's Heritage and Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Act by a 21–15 vote margin. Texas voters will have the opportunity Nov. 3 to approve a constitutional amendment protecting the right to hunt, fish and harvest wildlife.

Research

  • NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS BACKGROUND CHECKS . . .The September 2015 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 1,071,945 is the highest September on record for the 17-year-old system, with an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the September 2014 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,024,272. For comparison, the unadjusted September 2015 NICS figure of 1,786,743 reflects a 23.4 percent increase from the unadjusted NICS figure 1,447,485 in September 2014. To learn more about last month's NICS report, log in to the member side of nssf.org.
  • LONG TERM VIOLENT CRIMES TRENDS SHOW DECLINE . . . Historical data from FBI Uniform Crime Reports show significant decreases in both the number of annual violent crimes committed as well as the violent crime rate in the United States. The figures show a 35.2 percent decline in violent crimes over the past 20 years and a 16.2 percent decline over the past 10 years. The continuing decrease in violent crime comes at a time when firearms ownership have increased significantly across America, a fact that utterly contradicts the mantra of anti-gun groups that more guns equals more crime.

Retailers/Ranges

  • ATF Q&A . . . More great questions came in on our 24/7 NSSF member compliance hotline last week. One question relates to performing NICS background checks on customers who special-order firearms that are not normally in stock. Another questionrelates to a parent or guardian over the age of 21 purchasing ammunition for a minor.
  • DID YOU KNOW? . . . SHOT Show University tickets are discounted for NSSF Retailer members and Premium Retailer members receive one free ticket for the event. SHOT Show University is an educational day-long session for retailers that is held the day before the official opening of the SHOT Show. Learn more.
