Board approves updates to air permitting rules

http://dnr.wi.gov/news/releases/article/?id=3634

MADISON - Final updates to rules intended to improve how the state permits air emission sources were approved by the state Natural Resources Board today.

The rule updates [PDF] followed board-approved public hearings on the proposed changes in 2014 and listening sessions held by the Department of Natural Resources in the fall of 2013.

"These changes will help streamline and improve our operational efficiency and simplify the air pollution permitting processes as they affect businesses, while remaining consistent with the Federal Clean Air Act," said Kristin Hart, Permits and Stationary Source Modeling Section chief for the DNR's Air Management Program.

Hart said changes approved by the board relate to construction and operation permits, and the proposed changes clean up outdated rules and clarify confusing rule language. Hart also said that other proposed changes fulfill a statutory rulemaking requirement regarding an exemption from operation permits for smaller emitting sources as well as align state requirements with federal regulations.
