Big birding news of the week? Sandhill cranes arriving on schedule
Are you seeing or hearing sandhill cranes yet?
While there's no statewide birding report today, the week’s biggest birding news was the arrival of migrant sandhill cranes in Wisconsin. Are you hearing or seeing any where you live?
eBird data show a pulse of sightings in southeastern Wisconsin since Feb. 22, when warm southwesterly winds ushered in the vanguard of migrants looking to scoop up prime breeding habitat. Most of the sandhill cranes returning to Wisconsin winter in Florida.
Numbers are below average so far due to the harsher winter but the timing of these initial migrants is right on schedule. As long as snow isn’t too deep for too long, these birds are just fine. A few even overwinter here.
