Ashland Smelt Report for April 22, 2015
The ice went out of Chequamegon Bay on Saturday night, April 11, and the smelt run began the very next night. The smelt ran pretty well all last week, with a few hiccups here and there.
The run did continue over the past weekend. On Sunday and Monday nights people were still getting some smelt, but Carolyn Swartz, co-owner of Anglers All in Ashland, said she thinks the run is now winding down here.
“They might be able to get smelt up on the South Shore now,” she added.
Please note: Neither of the bait shops have smelt for sale any longer.
We hope all of you smelters had a great time during this year’s run and that you will visit Ashland next year when the smelt come to our shores once again!

Area Smelt Fry planned
The Herbster Community Club will host their 59th Annual Smelt Fry on Saturday, April 25, 2015. The Smelt Fry will be held at the Historic Log Gym, located at 86870 Lenawee Rd., Herbster.
The meal will be served from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and will feature all the smelt you can eat from Halvorson’s Fisheries in Cornucopia along with Captain Ken’s Firehouse Beans, cole slaw, bread, and more. There also will be door prizes plus a raffle drawing with prizes to include $500 cash and a beautiful quilt handmade by South Shore Quilters.
Donated homemade desserts from local bakers are always plentiful to either eat in-house or to enjoy later. When you purchase a dessert, the proceeds go to a scholarship fund for area students.
I threw in that last bit about the smelt fry up in Herbster, but obviously you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to. We have had a few calls from people wanting to know if there were any smelt frys (hmmm, or would that be “fries”?) going on in the area.
