Artist reception this Friday – Gaylord Schanilec: A Natural History

Gaylord Schanilec • Unionidae: Downstream. Wood engraving from Lac des Pleurs (Midnight Paper Sales, 2015).

Gaylord Schanilec: A Natural History

Artists' reception on Friday, February 15, 5–7:00 pm

Exhibition on view February 15–April 7

Meet Gaylord Schanilec and celebrate the opening of his exhibit at the James Watrous Gallery. The artist will offer an informal gallery talk at 5:30.

Internationally known for his color wood engravings, letterpress printing, and handmade books, Schanilec has often focused his attention on the wildlife, landscape, and culture of the upper Mississippi. His solo exhibition at the Watrous features his four fine-press books focused on natural history—My Mighty Journey, by John Coy (2019), Lac des Pleurs (2015), Sylvae (2007), and Mayflies of the Driftless Region (2005)—along with framed color wood engravings from each book and a wide selection of working materials.
