An Unforgettable View at Copper Peak

By Candace Ferguson

When I was first asked if I would like to visit Copper Peak and take the “Adventure Ride” to the top of the world’s largest ski jump, I must admit I was unsure if I would actually be able to do it. The brochure’s description of an 800-foot chair lift and 18-story elevator did little to calm my fears, but the prospect of witnessing “the highest, most awesome, unobstructed vista in the Midwest,” not to mention the gorgeous fall colors, steeled my resolve. Although I was pretty scared on the way up the hillside in the ski lift chair (another new experience for me!), I was so glad I did it and I actually enjoyed the ride both up and down the steep incline. From the upper observation decks, one can see 40 miles or more to the Lake Superior shoreline and all the way to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the Porcupine Mountains.
