Aldo Leopold Foundation Crane Experience
What is it:
Each fall, thousands of Sand hill cranes leave there breeding grounds of northern Wisconsin and Canada to head south to their wintering grounds on the Florida gulf coast. Before embarking on this annual journey, as many as ten thousand cranes spend much of the fall and early winter congregated on the islands and sandbars that dot the sprawling Wisconsin River that runs past the backdoor of Aldo Leopold’s historic shack. For the past 10 years, the Aldo Leopold Foundation has been providing opportunities for visitors to see for themselves this truly breathtaking natural experience. The opportunity to have a front row seat for the congregation of this ancient bird can only be found in a few places in the world and the Aldo Leopold Foundation is one of them.
