A “Far-Out” Weekend planned at Marsh Haven Nature Center

The music of John Denver is like an old friend, outlasting trends and standing the test of time. Hearing the first few notes of “Rocky Mountain High,” or singing along to “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” brings us back to a time when life was simple and memories were cherished. Marsh Haven Nature Center, a non-profit, volunteer-supported nature center on the north end of the Horicon Marsh, is paying tribute to those good times during the John Denver Celebration Weekend, which will take place September 30 through October 2 in and around the Waupun area.
Friday, September 30 will feature musician Jim Curry and his band performing a John Denver Tribute concert at 7 pm in Waupun's Historic City Hall Auditorium. Tickets are $15 in advance and are available through Eventbrite.com, at Marsh Haven, Waupun City Hall, or Rechek’s Food Pride in Beaver Dam. Tickets will be $20 at the door. A silent auction will benefit the youth programs at Marsh Haven Nature Center.
The music continues on Saturday, October 1 with a 1pm Cowboy Campfire Concert at Marsh Haven Nature Center, W10145 Highway 49, three miles east of Waupun. Gary Cross will be the featured performer for a 7pm John Denver Memories Concert in Marsh Haven’s Respect Our Earth Theater. An afternoon 1 pm matinee John Denver Concert will feature Will Kruger on Sunday, October 2 at Marsh Haven. Tickets are $8 and available at the nature center or through Eventbrite.com.
The John Denver Celebration Weekend offers additional activities including guided nature hikes, visits to the Peace Pole, screening of John Denver related films and documentaries, and educational programs. A full schedule of events can be found at www.marshhaven.com.
A tribute to raptor rehabilitator Barbara Harvey will be held Saturday, October 1 at 3pm. Barbara was a friend and supporter of Marsh Haven and well-known in the area as “the bird-lady.” Barbara gave Wild Birds of Prey programs at Marsh Haven Nature Center every spring and fall, and October 1 would have been her first program of the fall season. Marsh Haven will show a DVD of her 2007 program, have photos on display, and offer those who knew Barbara a chance to share their memories and stories.
For more information on the John Denver Celebration or Barbara Harvey Tribute, contact Renee Wahlen at (920) 318-9518 or director@marshhaven.com.

Jim Curry, whose voice was heard in the CBS-TV movie Take Me Home: The John Denver Story, has performed Denver’s music in sold out shows throughout the country and has emerged as today’s top performer of Denver’s vast legacy of multi-platinum hits.
