23 Citizen-based Monitoring Projects Receive Funding
The Department of Natural Resources and the Wisconsin Citizen-based Monitoring Network have awarded $100,000 in small Partnership Program contracts to assist volunteer groups that are conducting high priority natural resource monitoring projects in Wisconsin. Twenty-three projects throughout the state were selected for funding in Fiscal Year 2017, bringing the total number of projects assisted since 2004 to 242.
Through the Partnership Program, the department works with community and school groups, conservation organizations, and other agencies to gather critical information on plants, animals, water and other natural resources. Projects awarded funding this year include monitoring of bat populations, breeding birds, aquatic and terrestrial invasive plants, lake temperatures, and water quality. The Partnership Program enables data collection, citizen engagement and significant cost savings; this year’s projects will leverage more than $300,000 in matching funds and donated time.
