Phil Schweik is the owner of Hooksetters Fishing Services in Mosinee.  He cut his teeth fishing on the Wisconsin River, riding his bike every summer day until he knew every hole and every species hiding in it over 20 miles or so.  He‘s still taming the river today, and I am amazed on a weekly basis when his reports come at the fish he leads his clients too.  This week, upon request, in addition to a straight report he sends us a how-to jig for muskies column with three photos of fish taken with the tactic.  Connect with that story at “Inland Fishing” on this website.  Connect with Schweik at www.hooksetters.biz.  He’ll teach you how to catch fish.

Mike Yurk is another OWO expert who writes of his love for crankbaits even as a young boy.  Then, the “Plugs” were found in the local hardware store. Decades later, they still call Mike, especially during a fall search for bass.  Read Mike’s “Bassology” column posted under “Inland Fishing”.  Yurk, by the way, is a Hudson resident in northwest Wisconsin near what he calls some of the best bass fishing in the country, and a retired army officer.

Dave Duwe, a great guide in his own right working almost without exception Lake Geneva and Delavan Lake in southeast Wisconsin, took a trip to the far north with his son Nathan to plunge into the Turtle Flambeau Flowage.  Now, those vast acres dotted with more than 100 islands can leave even a guide a bit uncertain, so Duwe snagged one of the flowage experts, Jerry “Jerkbait” Hartigan to show him the ropes.  Read the story and see the photos posted under “Inland Fishing”.  Connect with Dave Duwe’s Guide Service at www.fishlakegeneva.com or www.fishdelavanlake.com  .  Jerry Hartigan can be reached at info@flambeauflowagesport.com or by calling 715.476.2526.

John Lindeman is another great writer and OWO angler who occasionally finds the dreaded skunk in his box when working his own personal walleye favorites, Green Bay and Winnebago.  He takes us back to our youths and in his case back to the Milwaukee River, where some species are almost always cooperating. Read the story under “Inland Fishing”. Connect with Lindeman and Kingdom Fishing Innovations at jlindeman@goldfin.com.

A shed antler hunting test will be held at the Hunter’s Jamboree at the West Allis Training Kennel Club near National Avenue and Hwy 164 on September 7.  “With more and more interest in training all sorts of dogs to find antlers we at the Kennel Club thought it would be a great idea to put on this event for our club members and the public to witness how it is done,” said Brian Schlomann.  “We will hold a small seminar on the course after the event to help folks learn how to get started teaching their furry friends how to find sheds.”  For more information, contact Schlomann at 262-225-9031 or brian.schlomann@yahoo.com. Brian and Kimberly Schlomann also send us photos of their two Chessies, Gauge and Alli, and another of Gauge reaping the rewards of his field efforts.

The 2013 fall hunting seasons are just around the corner and Department of Natural Resources officials are releasing the annual “Fall Hunting and Trapping Forecast” to help prepare hunters or trappers for their pursuits of upland and migratory birds, small game, deer, bear and furbearers.

The forecast provides details and reminders on season dates and regulations as well as season outlooks, population numbers, and research updates. The 52-page forecast can be viewed at http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/hunt/documents/forecast.pdf or at dnr.wi.gov, search keyword "hunt."
