Bear Bait and Bass

6-20-2013

We’re on the cusp of another September bear season and those of you lucky enough to snag a tag but aren’t into running hounds will be looking for the best buys in bait and just how to use it. It’s a huge, adrenalin pumping part of the sport itself, when the bears start to come to the bait and you start to figure out if one of the true monsters is visiting. I don’t hunt bear but I have helped bait and every year, like this year, I will be sitting in trees acting like a reporter and recovering bears with the Mike Foss group in Bayfield County. As far as I’m concerned, Washburn has been the bear capital of Wisconsin over the last decade with many bears over 400 pounds tagged, monsters to 638 pounds taken, and the legendary Snaggletooth spotlighted often.

Bear camp is quite an experience.  I hope you can go soon if you have not already, despite the long wait to receive that coveted tag.  Whether you’re a rookie or a veteran or even a guide and aren’t relying on someone like Mike Foss to bring the bears in, you should also be aware of Bob Spierings of Appleton, Wisconsin and Bob’s Bear Bait fame.  Bob has advertised with us for two years, he knows what he’s doing and I want to give him a plug now too.

Bobs Bear Bait, LLS has a very large selection of bait from cookies to trail mix to dry granola and candies. Bob also offers a variety of sweet toppings from blueberry to strawberry, in jams, jellies and syrups and carries his own full line of his very own scents in spray or syrup form.

“It’s all great for starting out or even adding to bait sites,” Bob said.  “A must have is our bottle of smoke smear.  It’s very powerful and very rain resistance.

Whatever you think will work best to get those Wisconsin bears coming habitually back for their meal, watch the Bob’s Bear Bait website (www.bobsbearbait.com) for weekly promotions and their ad in each print issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors.

“We offer speedy delivery to save the hunter time and gas money,” Bob said. “We’ll also be open longer as summer and bear seasons near and will try to accommodate your travel plans. Call first and we’ll have bait ready for pick-up before you head north. We’re also expanding into the whitetail world with great scent attractants which will make deer fearless when used with field corn.”

As usual, we have posted a lot of new material this week mainly under “Outdoor News”, “Inland Fishing” “Firearms” and “Explore Wisconsin”.  Send your own photos, stories and announcement s and we will post.

We’ll post photos and stories from the Bob Ellis Row Trolling Classic held last Saturday from a base camp in Presque Isle, as soon as it all arrives.  A 45 inch fish won the tourney.  As for me, I’m on the road again to target bigmouth bass in the slop on Pool 9 of the Mississippi River. Watch for that story.

Thanks for connecting with On Wisconsin Outdoors.  Shoot straight.
