Taking Issue…

Actually take all of our issues. They’re free, thanks to our advertisers. The September-October, “On Wisconsin Outdoors”, in fact, started hitting the stands last Thursday.  It’s also posted right now, you know, at www.onwisconsinoutdoors.com. By the end of this week 50,000 print copies will be available in 550 Wisconsin businesses from Gander Mountains to Ace hardwares, to liquor stores, gas stations, gun shops and groceries.  Get the entire list of distribution points on this site on the homepage.

Do you know what’s great about being an important publisher such as me?  I also get to be a paperboy every two months, taking 10,000 of these papers to about 30 of our sites from Kenosha to Germantown in my new 1998 Chevy truck with 298,000 miles on it. I do actually love that part…not the mufflers gone bad or the cracked window or the flat tires over six years…..but because I get to mingle with the hunting and fishing masses as I stock the wooden racks.

Case in point.  I walk into the Elliott’s Ace Hardware in West Allis.  That store alone goes through 2200 copies of OWO every issue. West Allis sportsman are off the charts crazy, meant as a compliment.  I come in ready to banter with the boys, ready to say impressive things like, “Do you know my brother John and I lost four muskies on surface lures in one hour on Rice Creek in 2003?”  But as I roll in with my cart of new papers, one of the many cashiers says, “You just made a lot of people very happy.”  The rack that had held 2200 papers of the July-August issue is as empty as my creel that decade I learned to flyfish.  And as I begin the restocking process, one West Allis sportsman says, “honey (not to me, his wife is standing there) how do you like this timing? The new issue is here” and another says simply, “Thanks for this man. It’s good and it’s free.”

No, thank you.  And thanks to our writers for bringing you passionately their hunting and fishing worlds and their own little pieces of Wisconsin. But most of all, thanks to our advertisers for allowing this all to happen without hurting your wallet. New advertisers are jumping on this ship every issue, and we will introduce them all in time.  Right now though, please meet our sponsors who brought you the September-October issue. Look at them when you do need a product or service that they’re the experts in.
