See you at DeerFest August 8-10

But, before we jump into DeerFest, OWO writer and Super Bear Guide Mike Foss is on a bear that he believes will go 700 pounds by the September season. He places it at 600 pounds or better now.  We’re in production for the September-October issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors and you will read about it then. But to give you an idea of what we’re talking about, this new pig two years ago chased “Wood Tick” off a Foss bait station.  Wood Tick, another black bear nick-named for his enormous belly, was tagged by a Foss hunter and weighed in well over 500 pounds himself.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

This Mike Foss bear is estimated this summer to already weigh over 600 pounds.

So, what are you doing this weekend? Nothing?  Come and see On Wisconsin Outdoors and Kwik Trip Outdoors at DeerFest August 8 (today): 2-9pm, Saturday, August 9: 10am-6pm, and Sunday August 10: 10am-4pm.  Kwik Trip Outdoors and OWO can be found together at our booth in the Muzzy Hall Lobby.  We’ll be handing out papers and KTO will also be meeting and greeting with great Kwik Trip goodies for you and chances to win some great prizes.

Stop by. DeerFest is being held in the Waukesha County Fair Park, 3000 Pleasant Valley Rd (Hwy PV), West Bend, WI  53095. That’s visible from Highway 45. From the south, take Highway 45 north to Pleasant Valley Road.  Exit east on PV. From the North, take Highway 41 south to County Highway 60. Travel east on Highway 60 to Highway 45. Travel north one mile on Highway 45.  Exit east on PV.  Entrance to the Fair Park will be on your left.

What to do at DeerFest?  Billed as Everything Deer, the organizers state that if it relates to deer or deer hunting you will find it at DeerFest.  There are over 200 exhibit/vendor booths offering everything from guided hunts to rifles, bows, tree stands, ATVs, food plot services and more. If you’re looking for a new hunting camp, DeerFest has log cabins, saunas and hot tubs to put in them and new 4-wheel drive trucks to get you there.

Celebrities Pat and Nicole Reeve, Levi Morgan, Troy and Jacob Landry and Lee and Tiffany Lakosky, Melissa Backman, the Holder Family, Tammi Gregory, Chuck Paddock, James Blankenbeckler, Krysten McDaniel and Chris Brackett are among the stars to be at DeerFest. Also shoot all the new bows in the Gold Tip Archery Pavilion (www.goldtip.com) and watch the 3D Archery tournament.  You get the idea. To get all the specifics, and advance tickets, connect with www.deerfest.com.

Let’s jump into the world of fishing.  Do you not eat northern pike because of the bones?  Do you know how to bleed your fish in the boat to make them taste so much better?  I don’t either.  But, my brother Jim Ellis is catching lots of fish; crappies, northern and walleyes and highly recommends both methods if you want everyone in your house to be very happy with you and the meal you put in front of them.  The photo below is the results of a 32 inch pike after the de-boning method. These fillets did not have a single bone.

This 32 inch northern caught by Jim Ellis did not have a single bone after preparation using the method below.
