Guns & Ice

Ice fishing of course continues to be the tactic of choice in Wisconsin in January and I suggest you keep tabs on our “Inland Fishing” or “Fishing Reports” pages to see what our guides are saying, and catching, on a weekly basis.  Our guides are not nuts for the most part and like any of us they have celebrated any reprieve in early winter that actually allows them to get out and target fish without freezing to death.

We’re as interested in your photos for posting as we are in the pros who fish for a living.  Send your hunting or fishing photos to ellis@onwisconsinoutdoors.com.

Wisconsin Fishing

Rich Heitman catches and releases nine pike with
Ty Kinziger in Waukesha County after a day in the cold with no action.

In addition to the fishing reports and photos, look for our first posting from the DNR that we put up recently focusing on the upcoming sturgeon season.  Once the spears start flying February 8, this DNR crew is great at keeping us updated on a daily basis, with photos.  I will be on the ice opening day at least to make sure we have our own stories and photos.  They’re expecting big, big fish and so far the water clarity is cooperating.

Also, connect with our “Firearms” page every week to see what new articles have been posted.  I would guess that our gun area receives more material for posting from around the country than any other area on the website.

Mark your calendars:

Join DNR Wildlife Technicians Chris Cole and John Christian at 7:00 pm on February 5 at the Horicon Marsh  Education and Visitor Center to learn more about the historic presence of trapping at Horicon Marsh and the management role it plays today.

This reporter has visited Horicon Marsh on several occasions as a guest of Wisconsin super trapper Arnie Groehler. You can’t follow Groehler around without getting a good story.  We’re going to post one of those stories here on this website under “Dick’s Trips”.

Horicon
Wisconsin trapper Arnold Groehler shows a raccoon taken
on Horicon Marsh as part of a predator removal program that
assists nesting waterfowl and egg production.
