Bucks Amok

Isn’t it good to be alive and a bowhunter?  We’re into it now boys.

Answered a call Friday from friend Craig Cutts who was expecting me to join him that afternoon on private property near Oshkosh.  He wanted to let me know he had shot a beautiful nine-pointer that morning. The buck made the mistake of chasing Sally passed Craig’s stand at 15 yards.  That is almost certainly, the fatal mistake.

I told Cutts I was leaving early to take photos. As you can see below, it was absolutely a beautiful buck, something we all hope to tag or at least see during these so welcome days of the whitetail rut.

Craig Cutts takes this beautiful 9 near Oshkosh.

I said goodbye to Craig and ventured out to find my own stand.  Let’s just say I’m not as savvy as Cutts.  Located a good tree, jacked up in my climbing stand, pulled the bow and camera up on a rope, drew back, broke off intruding branches, and turned at the unmistakable  sound of a bounding deer to watch the 8-ponter skedaddle from 10 yards.

I was in the tree for 3 minutes maximum.  Never heard him come downwind.  Even when I whispered, “Wait…I just want to tell you something” he didn’t stop. He was very equivalent to the Cutts buck. “Rats,” I said. Also passed on 20 yard shots on a big spike and small doe in the last hours and watched a total of eight deer. A great sit indeed.

Other news from the field;  Steve Henske is seeing great bucks, but most are encountered while driving into or out of his stands near Wisconsin Rapids.  How do you like this boy, captured on the move by Henske Monday?

Steve Henske hasn’t scored yet, but he is running into great bucks as he drives into and out of his stand near Wisconsin Rapids. Like this brute.

Another very good buck made the mistake of wandering too close to traditional bowhunter Scott Heitman’s stand  in Adams County.  That’s a no-no in the Deer Survival handbook. Scott doesn’t miss much, regardless of what he’s shooting.

Scott Heitman scores again.  Traditional archer Scott Heitman took this fine buck in Adams County.

Mike Hart sends trail cam photos of bucks seen on private land near Madison.  Mike and brother Tom Hart took beautiful 8-point and 10 point bucks respectively in the last few days.

Mike Hart sends these trail cam shots of bucks on private land near Madison.  Mike and his brother Tom Hart scored on 8 and 10 point bucks, respectively this week.

Mike Foss sends trail cam shots of excellent bucks and Mr. Wolf taken in Bayfield County.  Deer pickings have been very poor the last few season in Superior Country like much of Wisconsin’s north.  So like all of us who see the occasional deer again, it’s just a great thing.  The saying, you never know what you’ve

got till you lose it is oh so true.  Not to wander too far here boys but, remember your freedom, and that nothing is more important.

Mike Foss send two trail cam shots of beautiful bucks captured in Bayfield County and one wolf on the move.

It doesn’t matter much if the bucks are out there if someone takes away your right to firearms or the privilege to hunt.  Don’t think they won’t if given the slightest opening.  Cherish what was earned by others and not ours  now or ever to give away. Fight for it.

Send us your  deer kill photos and brief description of where you tagged him and the story behind it.  We will post, or maybe print in the next issue of OWO.

The November-December issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors is posted on our homepage and available to you free at 550 locations also posted on our homepage.  Thanks to the following advertisers in this issue who allow you to bring Wisconsin’s outdoors home with you at no cost.
