On Wisconsin Outdoors

Traveler, this one-eyed bear weighing in at 500 pounds, has been a recent, frequent visitor at the bear baits of Northern Wisconsin Outfitters.

On Wisconsin Outdoors writer John Luthens and I will be visiting Northern Wisconsin Outfitters (NWO) in Bayfield County again in September to place the spotlight on hunters hoping to fasten a tag on a Wisconsin bear.  For some, the wait for that coveted tag has been as long as eight or nine years.  Luthens has his family roots in the Ashland, Washburn area and our fly-fishing expert knows the streams and rivers of Superior Country like the back of his hand.  So what a shame, we’ll be bouncing from bear camp to trout fishing in the cool of autumn.

Bear expert Mike Foss of NWO is also one of our longtime writers.  He sends this trail camera photo above taken from one of the bear baits. Meet “Traveler”, an estimated 500 pound bear captured one week in a swamp on camera and 7 miles away on another camera just one week later. NWO has 30 bear baits going over 35 square miles.  You won’t believe some of the bruisers they’re seeing. Soon, you will too.

Foss tells us in the upcoming September-October issue that Robert Haas, owner of NWO, is recovering from a very bad case of Lyme’s disease that got him while baiting. Not that there’s a good case. Ticks and swarming insects have been insane this summer across Wisconsin.  Far to the southwest, OWO deer expert Lee Gatzke is also recovering from Lyme’s.  Take great care out there.

Find one of the 355 Wisconsin Kwik Trip stores near you, and find every issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors.

Weekly, we receive calls from readers asking where they can pick up OWO or asking if they can subscribe.  Yesterday, for example, a man from Antigo wanted to know if the papers still go to his local Kwik Trip.  You can’t subscribe, this is a free, first come first-serve paper. But yes, Kwik Trip does carry OWO for you in 355 stores throughout Wisconsin.  Kwik Trip takes about one-third of our 100,000 press runs every issue, but get to your local store early in September.  The new issues can go fast.

And, please remember Kwik Trip when you need gas or food as you travel the state to hunt or fish or vacation. We do, every time we’re on the road. The map above will show you exactly where to find your store.

Thanks for connecting with On Wisconsin Outdoors.  Shoot straight.
