Ahead of Schedule

Two weeks out from total hip replacement, recovery is ahead of schedule. Home therapy continues twice daily, where I put myself through a series of exercises designed to strengthen the hip and legs.

Three times weekly and transitioning to two times beginning next week, therapy is directed by a nurse who also draws blood to make sure the blood thinner medication (Warfarin) is maintaining  the desired INR level. The “International Normalized Ratio” is a blood test used to measure the time it takes for blood to clot. Warfarin and some of the exercises are used to prevent clotting, a concern at this post-surgery stage.

Yesterday, just 14 days of our surgery I transitioned from a walker to a cane, and walked up and down my basement flight of steps for the first time. I hit the stores to purchase a GPS with Lori. Brother John Ellis handled my Milwaukee “On Wisconsin Outdoors” paper route for me when I was disabled and sister in-law Kerri Henske also jumped in that game. Today, lifelong friend Mike Hart will deliver our Madison route while I serve as navigator.

It’s nice to have good friends and family around when you need them. Plus, OWO Copy Editor Heidi Rich and Graphic Design Director Ali Garrigan are unbelievable.  They’re still waiting for this month’s checks and don’t want me to kick off. But, if you have surgery, adopt them.

As always, we have posted significant material from guides, chambers of commerce, the DNR, firearms organizations, and other interests from the outdoor world throughout this website.  The January-February issue is posted on the homepage, and by week’s end all 50,000 print papers will be available at 550 locations from Green Bay to Merrill to the Illinois border. Check out locations near you on the home page.

Look for information on the Cutting Edge Outdoor Radio program in this issue. Cutting Edge is Wisconsin only live outdoor radio show.  On Wisconsin Outdoors is also an advertiser with those Saturday morning boys on 1250 WSSP am.

Thank you for connecting with On Wisconsin Outdoors.

Shoot Straight.  If you hear a scream, Mike Hart took too sharp of a curve somewhere between Milwaukee and Madtown.
