A man has got to know his limitations….

Clint Eastwood said it.  And I believe it.  And so I am mostly getting out of the way this week and letting OWO columnist and fishing expert Wayne Morgenthaler carry the load.  I simply can’t compete with what Wayne is bringing to the table.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

Wayne Morgenthaler, OWO writer closely watched by the cops…dresses appropriately for an afternoon chasing crappies.

Wayne, one of Wisconsin’s great ones who I met as an outdoor columnist when he guided me long ago for a story on the backwaters of the Wisconsin River in Richland County, sent me a note this week; I found myself laughing so hard at what this retired educator from Richland Center had to say that I am sharing it with you.  His photo alone should make you want to keep reading.

A little background…  I sent the OWO writers a note asking them to send me names of businesses in their areas of Wisconsin which may be interested in placing an ad in our paper basically sponsoring their local outdoor columnist.  Wayne took it a step further, sacrificing a bit of his precious field time to visit the businesses himself…dressed up professionally of course.

Take it away Wayne:

“Wild day today, Dick.  Went to LaValle and left your price sheet, my business card, and one of our papers with the lady for Lake Redstone Realty.  Then on to the Dells where I contacted the Rivers Edge and left the same information.  I then went to the Great Wolf Lodge and did the same thing.  On my next trip I think I will contact John Deere out of Hillsboro and Century 21 in town.  I am finally getting caught up on the farm work for the UW-Richland Foundation.”

“I went fishing tonight on the backwaters near Muscoda and caught some nice 11 and 12 inch crappies which are in the picture.  As you can see, I didn't have time to change my clothes after getting home from the Dells.”

“Guess what?  I got stopped by the cops in Richland Center on the way home.  I thought I would get a ticket for my canoe being too far out the back.  Nope.  Somehow my fly rod line got hooked on something when I pulled out of the boat landing.  Probably a tree.  Any ways, all the line came off my reel but didn't yank the pole out.”

“When we got to town the line was trailing the truck about a block long.  The cop noticed it when I drove by and pulled me over only two blocks from Kwik Trip.  I thought I was going to get a ticket for having too much line out.  Lucky for me he was a good guy and all I had to do was reel up all 50 yards.  I had a lot of backing on in case I caught a big one.”

“Enjoy the weekend.”

Wayne Morgenthaler

Did you hear what Wayne says, good readers?  Enjoy the weekend.  If you enjoy it too much….take two aspirin and keep away from children…just like the bottle says.

And know your limitations.

Thanks for connecting with On Wisconsin Outdoors.  Shoot straight.
