Horicon Gobbler Falls After Hard Hunt
OWO contributing writer Rob Tobin shot a nice Tom turkey on Saturday morning at 9:30 am in Horicon Wisconsin. Rob reports “a ton of gobbling and the hens made even more noise cackling on the roost at 5:15 am. Turkeys flew down to a cornfield following the gobbling toms.”
Following an hour of gobbling in the field, Tobin was sitting in the hardwoods, on the hill 500 yards from the flock. They broke up at 6:30 and he never heard another gobble until 9:30when a distant tom gobbled after a set of some yelps from his old box call.
“Within minutes, two mature toms ran through the woods in the open, right to the decoy. They hit the clearing and I gave the first tom a ride home in my truck at 15 yards. Sounds easy, but that was my second attempt. I hunted hard this week for that bird. They were hanging up a lot and hens were everywhere being very vocal. Great morning! And I think spring just showed up. Time for some cohos.”
