Buck & Bird….
By Stacie Dowd
It was a cold, windy Saturday; November 8, 2014 and my husband, Jerry and I decided to go out hunting on public land in Jefferson County. I sat on an old oak tree that had fallen over in the woods on a ridge. My husband sat about 100 yards away from me.
He was excited to rattle and see if anything responded because it was the rutting season. I watched two doe's emerge from the woods but I couldn't get a clear shot at them. My husband continued rattling the horns and a short while later this buck came from behind me at a trot looking around to see what the commotion was. He came through the thick brush and I had a small shooting window.
I whistled and he stopped right where I needed him to. It was perfect! I shot him with my compound before texting my husband to let him know the exciting news that I just shot my first buck with my bow.
I then heard something else coming. I quickly knocked another arrow and along came a pheasant. I decided I was going to try and shoot him and that was perfect too. One of the best days ever in the woods with my husband; first buck and first pheasant with my bow!
…. & Buck
On Saturday, October 3, 2015 Jerry and I went out and wanted to go sit in the same spot in the Jefferson County woods but everything was so thick and overgrown we were unable to get there without making a ton of noise. So we ended up sitting on the ground by some trees.
We tried to make a little bit of a blind out of some branches to hide us. I was shooting a crossbow but truly did not think we would see anything being that we were sitting on the ground. About 15 minutes later this 5 pointer comes trotting in. He stopped and was grazing away 15 yards in front of me. He turned broadside and at that moment I decided I was going to shoot him. It was one of those moments that felt too good to be true; a 15 yard broadside shot. One of the best parts was my husband got to see the whole thing.
