Turtle Flambeau Fishing Report
By Professional Guide Jerry Jerkbait Hartigan
Today started out with very questionable weather, but we decided to give it a try anyway. The first spot we tried was a 10ft flat that had scattered wood on it where I had caught fish earlier in the week. I did not even have my rod out of the rod locker when I looked up to see one of my client’s (Bob) rod bouncing like he had a small walleye on.
As I looked in the water to see the size of the walleye, a mid-40's musky shot by the side of the boat and started peeling line like a train. With a long lite rod and 6 pound test it was all Bob could do was hang on and hope for the best. After a long fight (under the anchor rope, around the boat 3 times, and the fish rolling in the line so he had to be pulled in backwards) we managed to flip the fish in the boat with a small rubber walleye net. And I had not even got my rod out yet.
The musky was hooked in the mouth with a jig so I do not know if it grabbed a walleye and hooked itself or what happened. After that all we managed to get was a bunch of small walleyes on weedless jigs and minnows before heavy rain and lightning chased us off the water.
That's all the time I have to report as my son has a bear tag and tonight is his first night and I have to get things ready. I will let you know how things go on the water tomorrow.
