Turtle Flambeau Fishing Report 10-15-12
By Professional Guide Jerry “Jerkbait” Hartigan
Wednesday I guided Bill Kountz and his friend for a half day musky fishing and had a cold windy day with very little action. Thursday I took out Dick Martini and his friend for another day of Musky fishing. I warned them that the action was slow and the forecast was calling for stronger winds and on and off snow showers. But you know musky fisherman. They wanted to go anyway.
The weather ended up being much better than we expected and the fishing wasn't too bad either. After trying a few deep shorelines with Depth Raiders and Bull Dawgs we had nothing to show for it other than the guide (me) getting a good strike on my Bull Dawg and setting the hook so hard I jerked the rod up to my face while reeling furiously. I happen to have a long red beard, which I proceeded to reel into my Musky reel about 3 cranks until I was completely stuck. Luckily I missed the fish, as it took 10 minutes to figure out that if I backed off the star drag 4 turns I was able to cut and rip the rest of my beard out of my real.
After that embarrassing moment we switched to shorelines that dropped to about 10 foot with random wood. That type of structure produced a fat 42, a low 30's musky and a 29 inch northern on Suicks. A beautiful approximate 37 inch tiger also feel to a sucker. We only fished for about six hours so it was not a bad day other that embarrassing myself once again.
