Stevens Point Flowage Fishing Report June 19th
By Professional Guide Kenny Wallock
Before fishing could resume, my fishing partner, Dave Kinney and I put away our fishing poles for one day, hung up our fishing hats, cleaned up the pontoons, and watched with many guests as Jason and Sherry Szymkowiak were married on the Stevens Point Flowage. Jason calls the flowage home for fishing, hunting, recreation…and now, a place to be married.

Back to fishing
With Water temps in the 70's the walleyes are in their summer patterns. We have been catching our walleyes in 8 to 15 feet of water using 1/8th and 1/4 oz jigs tipped with minnows and crawlers. Deep wood has been a key and depending on current flow will determine what size of jig to use. If the current flow is not that bad we even downsized to a 1/16 weedless jigs with a half of crawler. Bluegills, Crappies, and Bass are also a bonus in the deep wood. Another location not to overlook are river points where the current pushes into a point and makes an under-cut in the bank.
The action for smallmouth bass has been explosive in 2 to 5 feet of water next to downed trees and rocks. My clients have been using Tube’s Spinner Baits and we are starting to see the top water action pick up for largemouth bass fishing the slop using Frogs or Buzzbaits.

Northerns and Musky are being caught on small bucktails and Spinner baits in shallow weeds and wood (next to the current break is a bonus). Bluegill action is a great way to introduce kids into fishing and can be very simple. The gills are holding in shallow water (again wood is the key) and very easy to catch. Use a clip on bobber, a small hook and bait it up with a small leech or crawler and hang on. Be mobile and fish downed trees till you find the big Bulls. Remember to keep enough for table fare and release the rest for another day.
I am glad to call the Stevens Point Flowage Home, so many spots, and when your fishing pole bends it could be that trophy fish you been waiting for all these years.
