Rice Lake Fishing Report 6-4-2012
It was bass and bluegills with a musky thrown in this week. The weather has cooperated, and with the warming trend the bass and bluegills have moved on their beds to spawn. Many fishermen have been taking their limits of bluegills.
One thing to remember is that if you are fishing a bedding area and only catching smaller fish, someone has probably been there ahead of you. It is better to move and find another area. In most cases the larger fish are the first to bite because they are defending their territory. Once removed, the smaller fish will move in.
It’s fun to run a plastic worm through some of the bedding bass. Some days you will be surprised how many you’ll catch. If you can’t see a bed, cast a fan pattern around a likely area. I admit the idea of sight fishing bass is fun, but there are times that the beds are deeper or hidden.
It seems that every week or two someone reports a musky taking a panfish being reeled in. That shouldn’t be a surprise—it’s what they eat and a caught fish isn’t acting normally. The musky is rarely hooked. He is just holding on to the fish. They usually hold on until they see the boat and then let go.
When fishing for panfish I keep a stout rod with a spinner in the boat. When we are ready to move, I try a few casts for a musky or northern.
