Price County Fishing Report 12-6-12

By Professional Guide Joe Brezinski

Many of our area lakes opened back up this week due to the warm weather the past weekend. Some of the small lakes remained frozen but anyone trying to venture out should proceed with extreme caution. Some shallow areas may experience 3 inches of ice only to reduce to an inch a couple feet away. Air temps should remain at or below freezing this week so ice conditions should improve by this weekend.

First ice anglers can have great success. There really is no fishing pressure and fish such as walleyes are still positioned on the late fall spots. On the clear deep lakes walleyes will be on the deep edge of points and bars. Set your tipups so your bait is about 6-12 inches off the bottom on the deeper ends of the breaks and points. Try jigging Swedish pimples or cicadas tipped with a minnow close to the bottom starting on the deep end of the breaks. Drill numerous holes working your way up the breaks and points. Dusk and dawn produce the most walleye activity this time of year.

Perch should also be nearby. Work the deep basin just off the breaks and points. Use your electronics and watch for fish to come off the bottom to take your offering. Small jig and minnow combos can be deadly for a good bag of perch. Check your fishing regulations on the amount of fish you can harvest.

Good Luck Fishing
