Northwest Wisconsin Fishing Report

Since opening day a week ago, the same question can be heard in the coffee shops, sport shops, restaurants, and bars all over the northern part of the state, “Is the ice out yet?”
In My 61 years, the last week has probably been the toughest week to target and routinely catch fish. Opening day found most anglers on area trout streams and trout lakes that were open with some nice catches of rainbows and brookies.

“Bridge fishing” was more popular than ever this opening weekend due to the ice conditions. Anglers fishing the bridge areas reported catching a few small bass, northerns, and very few pan fish. The most popular baits seemed to be jigs tipped with a minnow or a piece of crawler.
Small lakes that had ice free boat landings saw anglers finding largemouth and northerns up in the shallows where the green weeds were showing. Small, slow moving plastic baits seemed to work the best.
The last few warm days and a couple of light rains have helped to take out most of the ice on the lakes here in northwestern Wisconsin. The combination of no ice, access to boat landings, and warming water temperatures should make for great fishing in the upcoming week.
