Winds Make Fishing Difficult on Turtle Flambeau

By Professional Guide Jerkbait Hartigan

The last few times I have been out on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage in Iron County the wind has made things difficult.  Walleyes seemed to have moved a little deeper with fish coming from 12 to 14 feet on river channels and drop offs.  Smallmouth have been active along shorelines with many coming on jig and minnow while looking for walleye, but tube jigs seemed to work the best.  Largemouth are up along the shoreline and very aggressive hitting plastic worms.  Crappies are starting to spawn on some shallow lakes. On the Flowage we are getting a few crappies, but none of the big fish have milt or eggs in them so I am not sure what stage they are at.  The wind has died down, but it is still a high pressure system so we will see what today brings.
