Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report 8-16-2012
Speaker of the House John Boehner joins Hooksetters for a day on the water:
This weeks report is going to be a little different than any of my other reports. For the past two months I have been planning a fishing trip in Wisconsin for the Speaker of the House John Boehner. After initially being contacted by Dr. Tom Turner from Wausau about John being in the area, I have been working diligently with staff and planners along with Capitol Police taking care of scheduling and security detail surrounding every detail of arranging a fishing trip for the Speaker from beginning to end.

This was in no way any ordinary trip. Let's just say that there was a lot of safety measures taken and privacy surrounding this trip along with a security detail that you would not even believe. We in fact had to meet with a number of "security people" several days before the actual outing to carry out a "mock" run of the entire fishing trip.
On the day of our trip we (Justin Gaiche and myself) met John Boehner, his staff and quite an entourage of security people along with 4 local wardens in boats right at the landing. After a quick introduction and some final preparations we split up into several groups and headed out to do some fishing. This was quite a scene with multiple boats heading out so one person could fish for the day.
A couple of geese that circled my boat for about half an hour.
The bite was very good as John was able to catch several very nice walleyes and some big bass, both largemouth and smallmouth. He is a pretty darn good fisherman! All of our fish were caught jigging with 1/16th and 1/8th ounce jigs tipped with plastics or live bait in rocks and wood in 8 to 12 feet of water . We had a great outing, caught some very nice fish and sent John and his assembly back to the hotel with enough walleyes for a great tasting Wisconsin fish fry.
Oh yeah by the way, John also had one really nice fish that he fought for quite some time that eventually snapped his line... The epic story of the BIG ONE that got away.. Oh well John, maybe next time!

The musky bite has pickled up with the cooler nights and we are seeing more fish on jerkbaits and now some rubber baits as well. We are targeting depths of 8 to 14 feet along deep weeds and rocks. Low light periods still seem to be the best time of the day for catching a musky.

Bear baiting is going well with quite a few nice bears coming in to our baiting stations. Some are even coming in within minutes of us re-baiting!!! We are also seeing a lot more daytime activity which is a good thing now that season is less than three weeks away!
