Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report 6 - 15-2012

Walleyes have been biting well this past week on jigs tipped with minnows as well as jigs tipped with crawlers. Most of the action is coming form 6 to 10 feet of water associated with channel edges and either rock or wood.

The crappie bite is good with nice catches coming from suspended fish holding in about 12 to 16 feet of water.  These fish can be caught by running tiny jigs tipped with small minnows or plastics set under slip bobbers at about 5 to 7 feet down.  Don't be afraid to try different depths as one day can be very different from the next.

If you are looking for steady action and want some excitement try targeting smallmouth bass. They are aggressive, easy to catch, and will give you and aerial display that is second to none. We have been catching a lot of these hard fighting bronzebacks on top water baits and spinner baits while working shallow rocks and shoreline wood in 2 to 4 feet of water.

For you musky guys the bite is on!!! We have been catching some really nice fish and quite a few of them too....Most of our action is coming on bucktails but we are also catching some very nice fish on plastics and top water baits too.  We have been concentrating our efforts on weeds in the mid depth range (6 to 8 feet of water) along with working outside current breaks off the river channel.

For the upcoming 2012 bear hunters, this is a good time to start acquiring property and finding locations for your bait stations.  With about 3 months until the season opens, this is also a good time to start stocking up on bait and finding places where you will be able to get or purchase baits.

* On a side note this past week John Sparbel and I spent a few days at the Wild Eagle Lodge in Eagle River guiding Bernard Judge and his family from Chicago.   During the three days that we were there the fishing was outstanding as our group from Chicago caught dozens of nice walleyes limiting every day! We also caught along all the perch anyone could ever want!  The group also caught a lot of northern pike, a few bass, and 2 very nice muskies of which one of them was a tiger musky!!!

I would also like to add that the Wild Eagle Lodge is an awesome place to stay... The best in Eagle River nestled in the beautiful Northwood's right on the Chain of lakes! The accommodations are second to none and the scenery was beautiful.  I strongly encourage anyone wanting to take a wonderful Northwood's vacation to take a look at the Wild Eagle Lodge in Eagle River...  Contact Derek Burzinski and mention that Phil from Hooksetters sent you.... You will have a wonderful time!

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
