Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report 5-2-2013

With the warm weather we had last week the water temperatures really shot up. The temperatures went from 33 degrees on Friday to 53 degrees on Tuesday creating an outstanding walleye bite on the Wisconsin River.  With that happening the fishing exploded and we caught lots of eater sized fish in the 15 to 20 inch range, along with several fish in and over the 20 to 28 inch slot size.  Most of the fish have been coming from shallow water in one to three feet associated with rocks and gravel. These are spawning walleyes that are up shallow and they can be caught by running light 1/16th and 3/32nd ounce jigs baited up with fathead minnows. The lighter jigs are necessary in the shallow water as the heavier 1/8th and 1/4 ounce jigs will just get hung up on the rocks and snag the bottom.

With the warmer temperatures we have also started picking up a few non target species this past week as well, with smallmouth, northern pike and a few catfish now showing up. Most of these fish are coming while we are targeting walleyes but are still just as much fun to catch.

Turkey hunters are having a very good season with a lot of nice toms being taken. Most of the action has been in or around remaining food sources from last year or food plots that savvy hunters have taken the time to put in. Now that we are getting into the later stages of the season remember that the birds have been hunted pretty hard for a couple of weeks now and may be reluctant to come to food sources and especially decoys. Try setting up blind on secondary food sources without decoys and rely on your calling techniques. The nice thing about this season as compared to seasons past is that we had a very late spring this year and the birds are now just starting to "talk" so calling techniques are working much better than earlier in the season when they really didn't work at all.

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
