Ashland Fishing Report 7-30-2012

Fishing Guide Scott Bretting from River Rock Inn and Bait Shop, 715-682-3232 reports:

IT’S HOT.. That pretty much sums up the weather the past week here in our area. Also, sums up the fishing!! We have had almost a week of stable pressure and the fish have responded well, giving anglers all sorts of good times out here on the Bay and into the Islands.

Fishing has been good!! The fish do have feeding binges throughout the day, so, being on the water at the right times are key, usually early morning or evening. SmallMouth are all over the bay, and have been caught in a variety of spots, including rock - weeds - and flats associated with current. Run and gun from spot to spot to find active fish during the day, as the fish are really showing day to day feeding windows. Some spots are shut down for a few hours while others are hot. So, leap frogging to spots are key to keep on getting bit. Grubs on jigheads have been our mainstay in shallow water and big tubes in the deeper water (15FOW deeper). Lake Trout fishing is good, but, we are seeing a push of fish down deep already. We are looking at 80FOW to 100FOW off shoreline structure and 100FOW and deeper for flats areas. Trolling a mixture of spoons and flasher/dodger with a spin&glo has been the mainstay, as usual. Colors depend on light conditions and the mood of the fish, keep switching until you trigger the fish.

Fishing guide Roger LaPenter from Anglers All Bait Shop, 715-682-5754 reports:

Fishing has been great in the Bay and in the Channel. It always seems like you get to a point when the report stays the same. Walleye fishing continues to be great and the Bass are biting like crazy all over the Bay. Lake Trout and some Browns are reported biting from the Flats to Outer Island. Some species are in the shallows early in the morning. In some areas you may have to fish 80 feet to reach 50 degree temps. The water temperature remains in the high 70's, depending on the wind. The Trollers are extremely happy with Trolling right now. There have been some nice size Trout being caught and even the Anglers fishing on the docks are catching fish at all hours of the day. Reports are coming in that quite a few perch are being caught from the shore.

The Ashland Chamber of Commerce reports: Anglers are reporting some of the best summer fishing has been this year. Area kids will get a first hand chance to fish from a boat on August 4th, when the North Wisconsin Rod & Gun Club hosts the 66th Annual "Bud Williams, Boys and Girls Fishing Party" for ages 7 to 13.  Registration is at 8am and the kids will get to go out on boats and fish until Noon.

There are many outdoor events coming up. Check out www.visitashland.com for a list on events and activities in Ashland and to get an updated fishing report or a current weather report.
