Price County Fishing Report 6/23/14
It's getting warm out and live bait is becoming tricky to keep alive right now, One reason is that todays live bait comes from longer distances then it did in the past, When I first started working at Ross's Sport Shop I ran minnow trap lines daily, those minnows were coming from stream to the stores tanks to sell fresh to customers. Now DNR regulations have made us stop trapping minnows for our shop all together, we rely on buying minnows from bait wholesalers that get bait from other states like the Dakotas and Arkansas. The trick with keeping todays minnows alive longer is an aerator. The small battery ones work great out on the water and can help keep your bait lively all day long, when at home I suggest to buy a 110 aerator because the portable battery one that you use during the day will eat a lot of batteries pulling double duty in the boat and home. If your boat has a 12 volt outlet in it you can buy a power inverter and a 110 aerator and not have to worry about buying batteries at all.
Now for the fishing report, Ross's Sport Shop customers are reporting some great Crappie action again on area lakes, the Crappie have moved to deeper water, look for them around any type of structure. Walleye anglers are reporting a slower bite. Most customers are saying that leeches are giving them the best action with one customer bringing in a 26 inch walleye that was caught on the Phillips Chain on a jig and leech combination. Reports are that most of the walleye action is coming from 10 to 15 feet of water.
Bluegill action is still good with a lot of smaller action fish being caught. So if you want to entertain some young kids or get someone new hooked on fishing grab a container of worms and try for some of these action packed little fish.
Musky action has been slow but when a window opens you have a short period that can be action packed. The musky are scattered from shallow to deep and Ross's Sport Shop Guides have been catching them on anything from bucktails to surface to medium sized rubber.
