Chequamegon BAY Area Fishing Report, July 7, 2016

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay. Fishing is going strong depending on the day and the weather, according to Roger LaPenter, Fishing Guide and co-owner of Anglers All and Scott Bretting, Fishing Guide and co-owner of River Rock Inn & Bait Shop.

Scott reported "The good news is: Due to no rain for several days now, the muddy waters have let up for now." Bass fishing is always good in the Bay and there has been some reports of nice catches of Small Mouth. The Walleye bite has started to turn on at the mouth of the Kakagon Slough, the east side of the Bay, the Oak Point Area and Long Island. Anglers are using crawler harnesses and plainer boards using stick baits and having good fishing success.The low-light hours continue to be the most successful time for catching walleye.” Northerns are being caught in the shallows in the same areas where you would find the Walleye and the Smallmouth along with occasional perch and rock bass. “There are still some Northern Pike being caught by soaking smelt." Trout and Salmon Fishing remains phenomenal around the Islands. Plus, there has been some nice catches of Lake Trout and scattered Brown Trout and a few Salmon mixed in.
Fishing on the Inland Lakes has been productive for Croppies and Pan Fish especially during the week
when the water activities are a little less.
From the shoreline in Ashland there have been Rock Bass and Perch being caught on crawlers at the Hot Pond on the west side, the Marina and the Ore Dock Base!

Carolyn from Anglers All said, " The muddy waters have let up to a certain extent but that could change with any heavy rain activity." Walleye fishing has been good this last week over the weeds off 2nd landing with most anglers drifting crawler harnesses. Lake Trout and Brown Trout fishing has been terrific. Early in the morning there are still Anglers flat-lining stick baits off the first drop. As the sun gets higher the fish start moving deeper and then most of the anglers are turning to spoons and spin-n-glows.
Bass have transitioned out of the post spawn mode and they could be anywhere there is cover, depending on wind direction and water temperatures. Bass have been caught in some of the deeper drop-offs and also caught in the shallows.
Fishing has bee very productive along the entire shoreline!
