On Wisconsin Outdoors and Hooksetters

With the 2015 bear seasononly a few weeks away we have been very busy getting bear baits attended to and stand locations set up.  The fishing has kind of taken a back seat to the continuous preparation of another busy season but we have still been able to put a few days a week on the water.

Walleyes have been active early and late in the day with the best action coming about an hour before dark.  We have been catching a majority of our fish by jigging deeper structure and rocks in 8 to 10 feet of water with 1/8th ounce lead head jigs that are tipped with a night-crawler.

We are still seeing a very productive crappie bite with the best action early and late in the day.  The most productive method has been drift fishing in 12 to 16 feet of water along current breaks and sharp break lines of the river channel.

For consistent action we have been targeting bluegills in the wood. What that means is that we are working deeper water wood structure like submerged brush, trees, or cribs, with tiny weed less jigs that are tipped with a piece of crawler. Carefully drop your presentation in a likely looking location and get ready for the strike.. The fun part is trying to pull the fish from the structure before they tangle up!

With the cooler evening temperatures that we had this past week we tried giving themuskies a shot. John Sparbel connected with a good one early in the day along with seeing a few other follows.  Action was on large bladed Esox assault bucktails and top water baits by Lake X Lures fishing shallow weeds.

Smallmouth and largemouth bass have been very active this past week with most of the action again on topwater baits.  Most of the bass are holding in and around submerged structure (rocks, wood) but a few nice fish are still coming on jigs tipped with beaver tails and creatures.

Bear baits are looking good so far this season and the bears have been coming in steady. We have a lot of both day-time and night-time photos of some really nice bears coming in to our set-ups.

With that said one thing I would like to note is that if you are new to bear hunting or you are getting a late start at baiting, DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT move in on another hunters already established location. This goes on year after year and way too much!

We have had several really good locations compromised and ruined because some lazy hunter decides to move in on an already established location.  These are locations that we have spent countless hours of our time not only finding, but baiting and getting them ready for the upcoming season.  In addition to the time we spent there is the cost of our bait and gas that we have expended over the previous months to prepare and maintain the location.

As hunters and outdoorsmen and women we have a responsibility to respect what others have done or are doing out in the woods.

Have a great week,
