Look back four years Wisconsin, to compare and contrast Gannett’s corrupt coverage of the 2020 Republican and Democratic National Conventions to know what to expect July 15-18 when the nation’s eyes rest on Milwaukee, home of the 2024 RNC convention.  The DNC will showcase its conventi...

Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

As we start into April the walleye fishing is really heating up, the turkeys are starting to strut, and winter is just about gone!

On Wisconsin Outdoors

This past week we saw water temperatures go from the low 40 degree range to near 50 as of Friday afternoon.  Walleyes were making their way upstream to many spawning locations and can be found holding in traditional spring locations.  A lot of fish are now holding in less than 8 feet of water and can be found as shallow as 1 to 2 feet of water near shallow structure.  I typically look for any rocky shorelines, gravel bars or areas where there may be some sort of current break to find walleyes at this time of the year.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

My primary tactics for catching these spawning fish are working jig and minnow combinations or casting shallow running crankbaits in the 3 to 5 inch variety.  Just remember that is time of the year the water is cold and the fish are sluggish so work your presentation slowly.  In addition to the walleyes we have been picking up a variety of non-targeted species too, like bass, crappies, pike and musky.  All of these fish are great to catch and just add to the fun when you are on the water.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

For you turkey hunters now is when you want to start doing your pre-season scouting. Pick a few mornings and get up early and head out to the areas where you plan to hunt.  Watch and listen to the surroundings and pay attention for any gobbling. If you can find locations where the birds are roosting and/or flying down in the morning you will put yourself in a much better position when your season arrives.

Have a great week,
