Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

Spring is in the air and with that said guys are getting out on the river system and targeting walleyes below the area dams and spillways.  Ice fishing for the most part is all but done and anyone thinking about heading out should use extreme caution.  Even with the recent past few days of cold weather don’t let that convince you that the ice around the central part of the state is safe again.  If you see the snow around you melting (which it is) be assured that the ice is melting too.

For those of you that want to get out fishing, try areas below dams and spillways on the Wisconsin River system.  This is a great time of the year for catching big walleyes below the dams.  Jigs tipped with minnows or plastics like twister tails and paddle tails will work as will casting crankbaits like Rapalas and Flicker Shads.

With these early season walleyes timing can be key. Watch for sunny days and head out early in the afternoon.  With a little sun beating down on the water it may be just enough to trigger a feeding spree.  I have found that to happen more often than not when chasing walleyes this early in the year.  Another great pattern at this time of the year is fishing at night.  We have had very good success targeting walleyes way into the wee hours of the evening, and sometimes into the next morning, well after everyone else has headed home.

I had a great time at the Wausau Musky Show this past weekend and I got to see quite a few good friends. I picked up some great baits at Musky Innovations, Lake X Lures, and Suick lures that are sure to be winners for me and my clients on the water this year.

Lastly, if you have a chance get out and see Nate at Shay Creek Outdoors in Medford.  He has one of the best displays of Naze and Headbanger lures in the state.  In addition to that he still had a great supply of hard to find ice fishing jigs. For you archery guys Shay Creek Outdoors also has a very good line-up of archery equipment and a nicely set up indoor bow range with plenty of real-life targets.

Have a great week,
